US Travel to Cuba

This article should help you understand all the information you need to know about travel to Cuba for US Citizens.

Travel requirements to Cuba can be tough. You will see in the 12 reasons that are active right now, that Cuba is still a pretty hard place to visit, but the people are awesome and the visit, if you can get there, is well worth the trip.

The answer is YES and NO.  There are 12 reasons you can travel to Cuba as a US Citizen.  But before we go there, let me say that if you are a duel citizen and you were born in Cuba, you should note that the Government treats all U.S. citizens born in Cuba as local citizens, so you will possibly be subject to a wide range of restrictions and when in CUBA certain obligations.

The 12 reasons:

  • family visits (see above)
  • official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations
  • journalistic activity
  • professional research and professional meetings
  • educational activities
  • religious activities
  • public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions
  • support for the local people
  • humanitarian projects
  • activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes
  • exportation, importation, or transmission of information or informational materials
  • certain authorized export transactions.

The country is still not a desired place to plan a vacation. But if you go, the cool part is you can say you are there, but only due to one of the above 12 reasons.

Some of the reasons are very general, and the  Government will watch you and ensure you are there for the reason you claimed.  So, don’t show up and say you are visiting for a humanitarian project, and just try and visit bars and buy cigars.

Any travel, at the writing of this article, for recreational reasons is prohibited by statue. If you watched the news back when President Obama was in office, by the news broadcasts you may have thought that the President opened doors for US Citizens to visit Cuba, see the sights, visit hotels, grab some beers and hit the beaches, this is not the case.

If you have a beef with that, you can contact the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) who, since the U.S. decree, has issued general licenses for 12 categories of travel as shown above. Applications can be obtained at the OFAC and they will ensure you are going for what you write down.

We here at would love to visit this wonderful country. Like back in the late 50’s, you know, Ricky Ricardo and Lucy.  That would be a special trip to do, but the government, even without Castro, is still hahard-lineommunist, and we don’t see anything changing soon, albeit, maybe the Cuban Cigar ban by JFK will one day be lifted.  (side note on JFK and Cigars, He did order 4 Dozen  Cigars one week before he implemented the ban – lol)

If you do travel to CUBA, ensure you follow all the laws – learn the culture, and just be a good ambassador for the United States. Check the current (or current police officer’s opinion) for taking photographs, and don’t be surprised if your camera is confiscated. But a few dollars will get it back.
